At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai called for greater collaboration between the tech industry and governments to address the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI).

Pichai noted that while AI has the potential to drive tremendous progress in areas such as healthcare, climate change, and education, it also poses risks that need to be carefully managed. These risks include the potential for AI to be used for malicious purposes, such as cyberattacks or the creation of autonomous weapons. Additionally, AI systems can be biased or discriminatory, leading to unfair or harmful outcomes for certain groups of people.

To mitigate these risks, Pichai called for a multi-stakeholder approach involving governments, researchers, industry leaders, and civil society organizations. He emphasized the need for clear and responsible AI policies and regulations, as well as ongoing research and development to ensure that AI systems are developed and deployed in a safe and ethical manner.

Specifically, Pichai proposed the following steps:

* **Establishing clear principles for the responsible development and use of AI.** These principles should be based on values such as fairness, transparency, accountability, and safety.

* **Investing in research and development to address the technical challenges associated with AI.** This includes work on developing AI systems that are more robust, reliable, and less susceptible to bias.

* **Creating a global forum for stakeholders to discuss and debate AI policy issues.** This forum could bring together experts from government, industry, academia, and civil society to develop consensus on best practices and policy recommendations.

* **Empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to understand and use AI responsibly.** This includes providing education and training on AI, as well as tools and resources to help people make informed decisions about AI technologies.

Pichai’s call for collaboration on AI governance is in line with the growing recognition of the need for a comprehensive and responsible approach to the development and deployment of AI. As AI technologies continue to advance, it is essential that stakeholders from all sectors work together to ensure that they are used for the benefit of humanity, while minimizing the potential risks.
