New Japan PM Kishida takes office with pledge to avoid ‘dangerous’ inflation

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s new Prime Minister Fumio Kishida takes office on Monday with a pledge to rein in the country’s rising cost of living without snuffing out an economy still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kishida, a 64-year-old former foreign minister, won the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Sept. 29 and will become Japan’s 100th premier in a ceremony at the imperial palace at 12.30 p.m. (0330 GMT).

In a policy speech to parliament after he is formally appointed by Emperor Naruhito, Kishida is expected to unveil details of his plans to revive a pandemic-hit economy while keeping a lid on inflation.
