Margot Robbie is, apparently, the one who got the memo for a Barbie photo call at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills on Sunday, June 25. The Oscar nominee, who stars as Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film Barbie, attended the event in a hot pink Valentino dress while everyone else dressed in what can only be described as sandcore, the complete opposite of Barbiecore.
Robbie wore a custom hot pink minidress splashed with white polka dots, which was inspired by a dress from the real-life Barbie’s own wardrobe, according to stylist Andrew Mukamal’s Instagram.
Like Barbie herself, the 32-year-old actor styled the look with white pointed-toe pumps that perfectly match the polka dots, a pearl bracelet, and a quilted and studded yellow bag. Robbie wore her Barbie-blonde hair down and in a middle part, with soft, glamorous waves.
As for Robbie’s costars and director, well…they reached for shades of beige, gray, and ecru. Could it be that they got a different memo? That Robbie is the titular Barbie and has to stand out while doing press, maybe?
Kate McKinnon wore an oversized gray three-piece suit, Issa Rae wore matching ivory pants and tank top, and Gerwig wore a khaki-colored sweater over a pleated camel skirt, otherwise known as my Catholic school uniform. As one user noted on Twitter, the threesome is giving Shiv Roy, Naomi Pierce, and Gerri Kellman on Succession—a TV show that is the true opposite of Barbie.
Ryan Gosling made a valiant effort in a pale pink shirt worn over a white tank and black pants. America Ferrera yassified sandcore in a white maxidress with lace panels and scallop details, while Michael Cera, the second-most colorful of the bunch (whom I did not recognize immediately), wore an unbuttoned dark blue denim shirt over a black tee and black pants.
Barbie, the most anticipated film of the year—possibly of all time—hits theaters on July 21. It stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
